The purpose of this article is not to dash anybody's hopes and dreams. If anything, it is meant to inject a dose of reality into the heart of making a living on the Internet so that you have the best chance possible of realizing those hopes and dreams. I have learned from hard experience that burying your head in the sand is not going to get you to the end of the rainbow any faster. It is my hopes that after reading this article, you'll understand what you're up against when it comes to running a home based business.

The first thing you need to understand is that the Internet is huge. Think about how much competition there is just in your very own neighborhood for the hard earned dollar of the consumer. I have seen one grocery store put another one out of business because they were in the same town. There wasn't enough money to go around in just three square miles. Can you imagine what it's like going up against millions of web sites that span hundreds of countries? Some people spend years online and never make a cent.

So what's the answer? The answer is simple. You need to do some research. Find out what the competition is like in your selected niche. If you're interested in selling pet supplies on the Internet and you find that there are three million other sites doing this, expect to run into a ton of competition and hard times, especially if some of these sites are well established and have a great reputation. For example, if you were going up against somebody like Amazon to sell DVDs, you'd have a hard time making any money at all.

Just as important as competition is, you also want to make sure that what you are planning to sell actually has a demand. It doesn't do you any good to decide that you want to sell widgets if there is no demand for widgets. You may be the only site out there selling them but don't expect to make any sales if nobody wants them. There must be a demand. It's that simple.

Okay, so how do we find out what the demand is and what the competition is? This is simple to do. For the demand, you simply go to one of the many keyword tools that at available online. I use Wordtracker. You pick out the keyword that fits your business and see how many daily searches there are. If you find that there are thousands of searches a month for your keyword then it is safe to assume the demand is there. However, if you only find a handful, maybe not.

As for competition, again, this is simple. Just go to Google's search engine, type in the same keyword or keyword phrase, in quotes, and see how many competing sites there are. If there are only a few thousand, then there is a good chance for you to be successful in this area. However, if you find millions of sites, expect to have a difficult time.

This is one of the realities of making a living online. There are others, but absorb this one for now.
